One could rightly ask, though, why the new denomination? Why do we need to split the Church of Christ even more? Why don’t we just join another, existing denomination? The question is good and logical. It is indeed a great tragedy that the Hungarian (and international) Christian Church is so fragmented and weak. All the churches that are founded in a context of theological hairsplitting seem to be a proof that we Christians can’t get along well with each other, rather than showing how we carry each other’s weaknesses and errors in love.Still, despite all this, we think it is important to represent yet another denomination in Hungary, because – in our opinion – certain doctrines do not get enough emphasis in the previously-existing Hungarian churches. We think that teachers in other denominations also have good things to say and have rich messages with which they can further the Church of Christ and lead people to salvation. We don’t think that the doctrines we hold on to are inerrant or that they are the final word in the subject. We are open to be taught and be nurtured in the truth.  We do, however, boldly speak those things that we believe and profess to the best of our knowledge and wisdom. We accept every Christian who believes in the God proclaimed in the Bible (the Trinity) as a fellow brother in the faith—all those people and Churches that seek and love God. These, then, are the doctrines that we think are important enough to be emphasized more clearly in Hungary and which make us – for now – distinct:

  1. Optimistic Eschatology: Probably this is the thing that most distinguishes us from other Hungarian churches. After his resurrection and ascension, Jesus Christ sat at the right hand of the Father and began his reign. God made a new covenant with His people through Christ who had died and risen again. Those who rejected Christ at his coming were now cut off from his covenant. However, those that received Him reign with Him eternally as the New Covenant people of God. This era is characterized by God’s victory over evil and the spread of the gospel. We don’t believe that evil is gaining more and more control over the earth, so that in the end the whole world will be under Satan’s power. Neither should we expect to be taken out of the world by a Rapture in the next few years. Instead, the Lord has called us to be involved in building his kingdom around the world. We still have a lot of work to do as Christ is active through us to defeat his enemies day by day, until finally he will destroy his last enemy, which is death (1 Cor 15,25-26). It is only after this victory that Christ will return and the Last Judgment will take place.
  2. Covenantal theology and high-liturgical perspective. God has given his promises not only to us, but to our children. This is why we think it is important to include our children in this covenant through baptism and that they should also be partakers of the covenant feast, which is the Lord’s Supper or “Communion.” We also believe in having a beautiful, glorious and rich service of worship to honor our great God.  Although the details of this liturgy will not be exactly the same from culture to culture, it follows a basic structure that was presented in the Old Testament sacrifices and has been observed by most Christian churches throughout history.  First there is a call to worship God, followed by a confession of sin, a time of consecration of ourselves to God (including a sermon from his Word), a celebration of Communion or the Lord’s Supper, and finally a commissioning to go out and live as God’s people through the week.
  3. Theonomy – that is, applying God’s Law to all of life. We believe that the Old Testament is authoritative as it is interpreted through the New Testament and especially in the life of Christ (Mt 5,17). We believe that God’s Law is a practical guide to all aspects of life: individual and social, political and economic, education and child rearing, cultural and historical. God promises  that whoever listens to his Law and keeps it will live long and prosper and will be blessed (Deut 4,40).
  4. Dominion –that is, God gave to mankind the mandate to “be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth….” Man fell, but God did not revoke this commandment. God calls the Church to rule over the earth and to take dominion over it for Christ (Rev 3,21). In practice this means that God has given us the earth as our inheritance and we are to strive to use it, take care of it and form it according to God’s Law. The Biblical approach to work—including scientific and technological advancement, production and entrepreneurial spirit—is one of the greatest contributions of Christianity to the world.
  5. Calvinism – that is, God’s sovereignty. God is Lord of the world. All submit to Him. Before the creation of the world he chose (“elected”) some people for eternal life and left others to eternal damnation. (Eph 1, 4-23; 2,1). God is just and gracious. He does as he pleases according to the counsel of His will. God’s predestination doesn’t allow autonomous free will, since man is sinful and is a slave to sin. However, this does not lessen his individual responsibility to choose that which is good and to stay away from evil. God’s predestination is not self-contradictory, but it is a mystery that God chose not to share with us in its full depth (Deut 29,28).

The mission of our Church is that the knowledge of the Triune God would fill the Earth and that we could disciple the people and all the nations to the knowledge, love and obedience to God.

The more specific purpose of our Church in Hungary is that we could proclaim the love, grace of the Lord the worship and adoration that is acceptable to Him. We believe, that only after such restoration could we hope that God would have mercy on our people; whether on us individually or corporately on our families and our nation.

Vision of our church:

1.    To worship God in Truth and Spirit. We do this on our Covenant Renewal Worship and invite everybody to join us in this. We celebrate the Lord’s Supper, the Eucharist, every Lord’s Day and welcome to the table all those, adult and children, that have been baptized and who have a love for the Lord.

2.    To proclaim God’s Word in all aspects of life. We strongly disagree with those, who say that God’s word is limited to the pews and that true faith is only personal faith that is intimate between man and God. God has entered into a covenant with mankind and the terms of this covenant are publicly available in God’s eternal standard: His Law which is in the Bible. This Law pertains to all of Mankind and calls all nations and all people to repentance and obedience. Our calling is to proclaim the Lordship of Jesus Christ, who reigns on Heaven and on Earth, who is exalted and enthroned on the Right Hand of God the Father, in communion with the Holy Spirit, One God, world without end.
